Accepting Visit from Oberlin Shansi, English Department Discussed a Collaboration Program for the Lecturers

On Thursday, 29th of February 2024, English Department UGM accepted a visit from the representative of Oberlin Shansi, Mr. Gavin Tritt, to discuss new collaboration programs between two universities that have undergone seventy-years of partnership. One of the programs discussed is Oberlin Shansi’s Visiting Scholar Program, once participated in by Mr. Adi Sutrisno, the Head of the English Department. The Oberlin Shansi’s Visiting Scholar Program is a fully funded program by Oberlin Shansi which allows the English Department lecturers to improve their scholarly growth.  read more

The Retirement Event of Prof. Dr. Ida Rochani Adi, S.U.

On Wednesday (28/2/2024), the English Literature Study Program held a retirement event for one of the English Literature lecturers, Prof. Dr. Ida Rochani Adi, S.U. The event was held at GRAMM HOTEL by Ambarrukmo, Yogyakarta, attended by all lecturers and retired lecturers of the English Literature Study Program. The event was opened by the host with great fanfare and continued with remarks from the Head of the English Literature Study Program, Dr. Adi Sutrisno, M.A. As for the warm welcome given by Prof. Dr. Ida Rochani Adi, S.U., to the big family of English Literature UGM.

In the middle of the event, the occasion was filled with laughter and a sharing session to say a word or two about Prof. Dr. Ida Rochani Adi, S.U. At the end of the session, one of our lecturers, Achmad Munjid, M.A., Ph.D., led the prayer and all the lecturers, along with retired lecturers, were having lunch while a farewell video that all the lecturers and students said thank you for Prof. Ida’s dedication to the English Literature Program and Gadjah Mada University.

This event was held not only as a form of farewell between the active lecturers and lecturers who had finished their tenure but this moment was used to maintain the relationship among all of the lecturers.

On Wednesday  (21/02), the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada, organized a graduation ceremony at the Auditorium of Soegondo Building. A total of 77 students of whom 8 are students from the English Studies Programme were engaged in the graduation ceremony.  

As they’ve passed another journey in their life, the English Studies Programme proudly congratulate the students above on their well-deserved success in finishing their studies and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

This past Sunday, January 28th, 2024, was a bittersweet day for the English Studies Programme, as we gathered to bid farewell to a beloved member of our faculty, Bapak Dr. Tofan Dwi Harjanto, M.A., who is stepping on the well-earned journey of retirement. Over the span of more than 20 remarkable years, Pak Tofan has been the bedrock of our study programme, imparting his extensive knowledge in Semantics, Pragmatics, Discourse Analysis, and Academic Writing. His prolific contributions have yielded more than 41 publications, each reflecting his unwavering dedication and profound knowledge.

It has been a privilege to have Bapak Tofan Dwi Harjanto walk the halls of our department. His unwavering commitment to education, and his mentorship have profoundly enriched us all. As Pak Tofan transitions into this new chapter of life, we take this moment to honour and celebrate the indelible mark he has left on our study programme.

Pak Tofan, we extend our deepest gratitude for the years of guidance, inspiration, and wisdom you have shared with us. May your retirement be as rewarding and fulfilling as your time here with us. You leave behind a legacy that will be cherished and upheld for many years to come.

“Harmony in Diversity: A Journey from Jogja to Singapore, and Back” – Exploration of Multiculturalism Through Collaboration of Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM and National University of Singapore (NUS) to Promote Diversity

At the end of 2023, “Harmony in Diversity: A Journey from Jogja to Singapore, and Back” emerged as an inspiring collaborative work between the lecturers and students of the English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences UGM and National University of Singapore (NUS). Along the program, the participants gained a lot of new knowledge regarding cross-cultural interaction; a valuable experience that highlights the importance of celebrating diversity and eliminating the barriers that may hinder the unity among cultures. 

This book is divided into several chapters, written by two lecturers of the English Department (Alvanita, S.S., M.Ed., dan Rahmawan Jatmiko, S.S., M.A.) and ten students of English Department: Maulita Shinta, Misma Ro Daud, Jesse Puspita, Leni Cahya, Mellyana Nungki, Anisa Sofiana, Aulia Muchtarom, Gabriella Novianti, Anis Daika, dan Nur Aini. Those chapters offer fresh perspectives on multiculturalism in Singapore and Indonesia, broadening readers’ awareness of cross-cultural interaction. 

“Harmony in Diversity: A Journey from Jogja to Singapore, and Back”  is a valuable contribution in the topic of multiculturalism and cross-cultural exchange. The writers bring the readers on a journey to reflect how vital communication and cross-cultural awareness are. This collaboration is expected to inspire other cross-cultural exchange programs and academic partnerships in the future, promoting the celebration of harmony in diversity.

[Appreciation Post] Lexicon Categorized as a SINTA 3 Journal

Lexicon, a journal published by the English Studies Programme, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM, with the English Studies Association in Indonesia (ESAI), achieved national accreditation by Kementrian Pendidikan, Kebudayaan, Riset, dan Teknologi Republik Indonesia. Currently, Lexicon is categorised as a SINTA (Science and Technology Index) 3 journal.

Lexicon is a biannual journal that releases a new issue every April and October. Lexicon publishes articles in linguistics (focusing on pragmatics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and translation) and literature (focusing on interpreting short stories, novels, plays, and poems). Submission to the Lexicon journal is free and is always open throughout the year. The writers can be from any region of the globe, but submission is strictly restricted to articles written in English.
