Who doesn’t love learning while traveling? To answer that question, let us take a look at the latest English Department UGM’s program Academic and Cultural Exchange UGM-NUS 2019. In cooperation with the National University of Singapore (NUS), this program carried out the theme of Celebrating Multiculturalism. Spontaneous Translation Workshop with Dr. Kitsie Emerson

Translating sounds challenging to many people. It often requires a lot of time to think about the equivalent word in the target language. Even more challenging is interpreting, where we have less time to think. Now what about spontaneous translation for wayang performances?

English Department UGM conducted a Workshop on Spontaneous Translation on November 5, 2016, in Ruang Sidang 1 Gedung Poerbatjaraka, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, UGM. The speaker for the workshop was Dr. Kitsie Emerson, a spontaneous translation expert. The workshop was organized by head of the English Department, Dr. Adi Sutrisno, M.A, and one of the lecturers of English Department, Dr. Eddy Pursubaryanto, M. Hum, who is also a professional puppeteer. Fifteen students of English Department attended the workshop. read more

Four Tales, Four Dalangs, and Four Languages: Wayang Kancil in a Rare Multilingual Spectacle

On Friday evening, February 3rd 2017, a one-of-a-kind yet exquisite puppet show performance of Wayang Kancil was held in Balai Budaya Minomartani Yogyakarta by Universitas Gadjah Mada’s English Study Program.

Exceptionally presented in four different languages, the show was also accompanied by a spontaneous translation. Done in six languages altogether (Javanese, English, French, Arabic, Japanese and Indonesian), the spontaneous translation for the puppet show exudes some kind of spectacle and uniqueness to the show itself, not to mention the awe-inspiring experience for its audiences. Tiwi Pratiwi, Karina Anjani Rusli, Gilang Wicaksono, Ali Shahab, Siti Aminah, Amirul, Yoko Yoshida, and Dewo Dewi were named translators for the show. read more

Dalang Fakultas Ilmu Budaya UGM Berkiprah di Malaysia

Drs. Eddy Pursubaryanto, M.Hum. – staf Jurusan Sastra Inggris FIB-UGM – diundang untuk mendalang Wayang Kancil di Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Tanjong Malim, Malaysia untuk memeriahkan malam kesenian dalam rangka “The 1st International Music and Performing Arts Conference (IMPAC) yang dilangsungkan tanggal 19-21 November 2014. Iringan wayang dengan gamelan Jawa oleh para mahasiswa Faculti Muzik dan Seni Persembahan UPSI yang diasuh oleh Mayco Santaella, salah seorang dosen di Fakultas itu. Pertunjukan berlangsung di Panggung Budaya pada tanggal 19 November 2014 malam. Cerita yang dibawakan adalah ‘The Power Play’.

Eddy juga diminta memberi satu presentasi tentang Wayang Kancil. yang diadakan oleh Faculti Muzik dan Seni Persembahan pada tanggal 17 November 2014 yang dihadiri oleh para mahasiswa dan dosen. Kuliah ini merupakan presentasi bulanan yang bertajuk Talk, Play, Think (TPT). Presentasi ini berisi demonstrasi musik dan seni pertunjukan oleh staf dosen, pembicara tamu, atau praktisi seni profesional. Presentasi dalam TPT diharapkan menjembatani gap antara teori dan praktek, antara akademisi dan praktisi. TPT merupakan upaya agar berbagai pengetahuan dapat di dapat melalui academic setting. read more

A Short Visit to Flinders University, Adelaide

3-10 OCTOBER 2014 The English Department extends its international networking by sending four students of the International Undergraduate Program (IUP): Adolf Richardo Bagus Setiadi, Anisa Amalia Firdausi, Citra Kinanti Kayang and Shabrina Cintysa Putri and two lecturers, Sharifah Hanidar and Nur Saktinigrum to Flinders University. The aim of running this program is to improve the students’ academic skills, interpersonal communication skills, and cross cultural understanding.The short visit was initiated by the English Department represented by Nur Saktiningrum and Ian Sebastian from Flinders University.

Staff Visit to Monash University

8-9 October 2014 In line with one of the missions of the English Department which is to provide international exposure to its students, the English Department has cooperated with institutions some of which are Oberlin College (US), Texas A&M University and American Studies Centre, India, in the fields of English language, culture and literature.

The English Department would like to extend its international networking by sending Nur Saktiningrum to Monash University proposing several programs for both the American Studies Graduate Program and English Department Undergraduate Programs. There has been a preliminary discussion about this program via e-mail between the English Department which was represented by Nur Saktiningrum and Monash University represented by Eugene Sebastian and his staff. read more

“Cultural Dialogue Through Gamelan”: National University of Singapore (Nus) dan Prasasti

Pertunjukan Wayang Kulit berbahasa Inggris dengan dalang Ki Eddy Pursubaryanto (staf pengajar Jurusan Sastra Inggris FIB UGM) menjadi puncak acara bertajuk “Cultural Dialogue Through Gamelan”. Cerita yang dibawakan adalah “The Return of Dewi Sri”, sebuah cerita dalam mitos agrikultur tentang Dewi Sri yang dipercaya sebagai Dewi Kesuburan dan Dewi Padi. Para penabuh gamelan merupakan gabungan antara mahasiswa NUS dan PRASASTI (Pradangga Sastra Inggris). Acara ini merupakan kolaborasi antara 12 mahasiswa NUS yang dipimpin oleh Miguel Escobar Varela dan PRASASTI – kelompok gamelan mahasiswa Jurusan Sastra Inggris FIB-UGM. Acara tersebut berlangsung pada hari Kamis, 25 September 2014 malam bertempat di Balai Budaya Minomartani, Yogyakarta. Pada sore hari selama 2 jam, sebelum pertunjukan Wayang Kulit, kedua kelompok mahasiswa mengadakan workshop gamelan khusus untuk mengiringi pertunjukan Wayang Kulit pendek. Workshop dipandu oleh Nanang Karbito, S.Sn. dan Eddy Pursubaryanto.

Miguel Escobar (alumnus INCULS FIB-UGM) mengatakan bahwa kegiatan mahasiswa NUS selama lima hari tersebut merupakan kegiatan wajib selama libur tengah semester (mid-semester break) dari matakuliah “Theatre and the World” yang juga dia ampu. Pada semester ini kota Yogyakarta dipilih sebagai tempat field-trip mereka. Selain menjadi tamu Fakultas Ilmu Budaya UGM untuk workshop gamelan dan Wayang Kulit, mereka juga menonton Wayang Kulit di Pusat Kusnadi Hardjasoemantri pada hari Jumat 26 September 2014 serta mengunjungi beberapa tempat yang terkait dengan World Theatre. Pengalaman di Yogyakarta diharapkan dapat memberi pendalaman tentang tradisi teater Asia terutama Wayang Kulit. read more
